I saw this plane in 1972 at Lambert Field. I was getting my Boy Scouts Aviation merit badge and was going to go up in a Beech V tailed Bonanza. If that wasn't cool enough, here come the Eagle in that hi Viz paint scheme out from the McDonell Douglas hangar. I watched transfixed as it taxied by, with two Missouri Air Guard F4 Phantoms trailing it to fly chase. He took off, snapped the gear up and went straight up. The poor F4s had to spiral up after it, leaving black exhaust for miles. He started pulling a contrail, rolled it over and headed for Illinois. I stood there slack jawed, almost forgetting I was going up myself. I will never forget that.

It's a small solid-fuel rocket. Some of them were made by Lockheed in Mentone Ca. My MOM worked there. I saw 2 static firings as a small boy there. They were mounted pointing into the ground with the exhaust going up into the air.

my dad was a glider pilot-on D-Day he landed his glider between the rows of a apple orchard shearing off the wings--he,his crew walked a way--he was thrust into leading a combat unit headed to germany,he got a Sgt to help him since he had zero combat experience but as a officer they headed across France and met up with the russians in germany,shared vodka!!

Jimmy Doolittle did all sorts of things over the years, including working with Shell to improve aviation oils and fuels, and helping to test and develop high altitude navigation equipment and oxygen breathing equipment. There are probably few that have done so much for aviation as a single person.

Awesome Aircraft! I had the privilege of going inside of and sitting in the cockpit of the last XC-142A at The NMUSAF. It had such potential.

I remember the meals they served on airplanes in the 50s and 60s. People joked and complained about them even then. Still, on a plane is one of the few places where your food isn’t served by someone with rings through their noses, lips or tongues. My hat is off to hard working flight attendants everywhere. They are the true company representatives.
